Just saw a scene: this producer came over to our dept and demanded: what are the librarians for?

Okie, have to explain the job scope a little to enable you to understand:

For every media company, there is a media library to store all the tapes produced in singapore, the rushes, the edited copies etc. Here in our company, this also includes tapes from all over Asia because we do the transmission for their channels here, in singapore.

So librarians' main job, (as i see it) is to barcode all the incoming, outgoing and transiting (including borrowing and returning by all the rubbish people in the company) of the tapes so that we can track each and every one of the tape. They also pull out all the tapes required for that week's airing (for all seven channels) and tapes required for dubbing etc.

Every week, there is a bible for each channel to fill in. This is the breakdown of all the programs in each day of the week. The show, the promo, the commercial, the music etc etc. This bible will be filled in by people in charge so that librarians can pull out the correct tape to pass to transmission people.

For singapore-produced shows and promos, the producers in singapore has to provide the barcodes each week for each promo or show. For the other things, like other channels, acquired shows from overseas, commercials, all these are done by other people.

THIS producer just stormed up and demanded what are librarians for if she needs to provide the barcode every week.

I was super SUPER pissed. She ended off by saying that she has a lot of tapes coming through her every week and she cant cope if she still has to do all this stuff.

Firstly, whatever tapes you have, you can NEVER NEVER compare to the number of tapes the librarian has to deal with. So shut your big mouth up.

Secondly, librarians (by the mere notice of their names) do not decide which promo or show will be going on air that week. They are not responsible for it. Since you are the producer of the show, YOU should be the one who knows your tapes best and provide a more efficient way for the library to help you take the tape to transmissions.

Even though we have the library program to help us find tapes etc, because of the fact that YOU stupid guys din label your tapes properly, even if you do, your colleagues dun label them the same way as you, the librarian will have a hard time trying to find the tape by themselves.

Another thing is, there are seven channels with hundreds of programs, thousands of promos and millions of songs going on air each week, you expect the librarians to spend their lives just finding tapes for air each week?! They have enough things to deal with! Unless you prefer to pull out tapes yourselves when you wan to borrow and return them yourselves.

And to claim that YOU are busy. What makes you think you are so special? Just because you are a PRODUCER?

and i thought with experience would make you understand better. i guess not. it only kept you stuck in your little world thinking all about yourself.

And it's not you alone who are doing the bible! We are ALL trying to help by filling in our own parts. You have the nerve to complain.
